Now that we’re past the halfway point in 2026, we thought we’d take a look at some of the trends that will impact the metalworking industry for the rest of 2026.

Interestingly, we’re seeing developments previously projected as emerging graduating to the implementation stage. Things tend to move quickly in our industry, making it vital that suppliers jump on board with changes sooner rather than resisting. 

Here are our top five trends that will carry our industry forward into 2027:

 

AI-Powered Manufacturing Becomes More Prevalent In Precision Machining And Fabrication

At the start of 2026, many manufacturers were still evaluating how AI could improve their operations. However, rapid technological advancements have prompted business owners to move beyond conversations and into implementation. 

In metalworking, AI is typically embedded within machining, quality assurance, maintenance, and production planning systems rather than operating as a standalone technology. CNC platforms increasingly use real-time sensor feedback to optimize feeds, fabrication speeds, toolpaths, and machine performance. 

AI also provides operators with actionable insights, allowing for swift decision-making that improves scheduling, predicts equipment failures, and identifies quality issues before defects occur. All of these cost-effective benefits will continue to grow AI’s role within precision machining and fabrication.

 

Manufacturers Expand The Use Of Digital Twins As A Core Engineering Tool

One of the most exciting developments in manufacturing is the digital twin, a virtual replica of a physical asset, process, or entire factory.
